Mesh Cognition implements a three-layer architecture that separates user truth, machine inference, and resolution:
User Emotional Layer
User-declared emotional state and intent. What users explicitly communicate about their feelings — position, direction, and goals. Immutable and forms the ground truth.
Machine Inference Layer
Continuous-time emotional inference from behavioral and contextual signals. Models trajectories — understanding not just current state but where emotion is flowing.
Resolution Layer
Dynamic fusion of user and machine trajectories with full provenance. When user declarations exist, they take priority. Every decision is auditable.
Affective Integrity
At the heart of Mesh Cognition is a fundamental ethical principle:
Affective Integrity means that AI must never override, dismiss, or contradict a user's self-declared emotional state. The user is the ultimate authority on their own feelings. Machine inference can suggest, but never assert.
Origin & Evolution
The concept originated as Mesh Memory Protocol based Intelligence — a general framework for continuous, interconnected cognition conceived by Hongwei Xu. The vision: intelligence built on mesh architecture, where cognitive patterns flow and interconnect rather than exist as discrete states.
In 2025, EI-3 (Emotional Intelligence – 3 Layer Architecture) was developed as the first protocol implementation, applying the general framework specifically to emotional intelligence governance. EI-3 established the principle of affective integrity.
Now, with continued research and development, the paradigm has matured into Mesh Cognition — the comprehensive realization of continuous-time emotional intelligence.
